The ability to upgrade items allows players to improve their weapons and equipment with new affixes, increasing its stats base or providing additional benefits. To upgrade items, players must have the item in their inventory and have access to the kiln.

Typically objects that have weak bases (like rings) can be upgraded to a more powerful base, while items with strong bases like eth titans aren't affected significantly in their stats after being upgraded.

Upgrade components

Upgrade components are items that can be used to upgrade trinkets, weapons, armor and tools for gathering, offering an attribute bonus or extra effect when the equipment is being used. They can be purchased from vendors, gathered in loot, dropped by enemies or as a reward from missions or chests. Some upgrades can have additional cosmetic effects. Most upgrades require that the equipment be at a certain level to upgrade.

In order to upgrade a weapon or piece of armor, the player must select it and then click the Upgrade button on the toolbar. The screen will show on the right-hand side of the screen a preview that shows the expected upgrade stats and the components or materials required for the upgrade.

There are three kinds: universal upgrades (which include gems) Prefix upgrades and suffix upgrade components. Universal upgrades, such as gems, are able to be used on any kind of equipment. They provide a smaller bonus than upgrade components that have a type limitation. Infusions, which can only be placed in gear that is ascended and legendary equipment, are the same as gems, but offer higher bonuses and are not able to be placed in any other type of equipment. Suffix upgrades can be added to gathering tools. They add a suffix to the end of the item's name. For example, adding a Glyph would make a Staff wrapping of Minor Vigor into a Canthan staff wrapping of Minor Vigor.

If the player upgrades their gathering tool and replaces the glyphs with a different one the previous one will be returned to their inventory. If you replace any other upgrade component with a glyph, it will be destroyed, with the exception for inscriptions, which can be freely swapped.

Leveling

The upgrade system in Path of Exile has some significant differences from previous versions. Gear is now broken down into tracks, and items can only be upgraded a set number of times before they're "leveled out." The cost of upgrading increases with each level, but the materials needed do not. This allows players to focus their efforts on a specific few items and maximize the effect of those items, instead of spreading the cost of upgrades across several pieces.

If an item is completed and is leveled out, it will be eligible for a new set of upgrade components, as well as a boost in the chance that the upgrade will succeed. This bonus is known as the Artisan's Energy and it is reset to 0 in the event of failure, or increases when the upgrade succeeds.

Rerolling
