Upgrades to items can be used to boost the stats of a particular item. Based on the type of upgrade, it can increase the rarity of an item or mark Level and boost additional stats.

Item Level

The item level can be checked by pressing the ALT key on a PC or using the left stick (L3) on XB1 and PS4. This will show the full description of the item, including its value. You can also find it by hovering over an item and typing in /itemlevel chat.

There are a few theories on how the item level calculation is made. Item Luck

However, it does not directly affect damage or the ability to upgrade items. It gives players the chance to upgrade equipment earlier in the game. This is particularly beneficial in early game runs because players tend to put weapon scaling and defenses above raw damage gains.

In addition to influencing item discovery, Luck also increases the chance of success when upgrading items with the Blacksmith. This should not be confused with the Blacksmith's overall upgrade chance that increases with each level of the item upgrader mod and can be further increased by using an anti-material, such as a Scroll of Strength or a Jewel of Blessing.

The shields, armor and weapons come with a default Luck value of 40. These items can be enhanced with golden ingots, or spined leather (depending on their material type) for a further +40 luck or to boost the Luck of an item up to 140.

Furthermore some items, such as the Hollow infused weapon, can be equipped to increase the damage dealt by any damage-dealing skill by 5percent. These items are available in the shop or created by using the appropriate ingredients.

Item Failure

Not all upgrades work. However, there are some cash shop items that allow players to increase their success rate or prevent themselves from losing an item if the upgrade is unsuccessful.

When you upgrade an item the success rate is shown in the Honing UI. The percentage represents the likelihood of successfully upgrading the item. This can be increased with Additional Materials or Special Materials. There are limitations to how much the success rates can be improved, and the overall chance of a failed upgrade cannot exceed 100%..

The luck of an item can influence the success of an upgrade. All items have an overall success rate of 25%, and every item with Luck increases the chance of success by 5percent.

Note that upgrades to items are rendered above the inventory items, so enchantment glint and other effects could be masked by them. If you wish to disable the upgrade overlays, the config option decoration.renderUpgradeOverlays can be set to False in the Item Upgrader CORE client config.
