Item upgrades are a common and essential way to boost the performance of numerous items in Path of Exile. They can be a great source of damage and more AD or even more attaches.

Armor

Like other upgrade components jewels are able to be swapped with a identical jewel without destroying it. You can only replace the jewel once within an item of equipment.

It is typical to use more jewelry for aesthetic reasons. Apart from improving performance, the jewels create a surface that is harder than metal, so repeated friction from pivots doesn't cause damage as easily.

A Glyphmaster can provide glyphs to enhance the look of your weapons and shields. These glyphs offer a small boost and can be freely exchanged, however they're not guaranteed to appear as loot. Glyphs can be upgraded, as jewelry, by visiting the Jeweler for gold and scattered Crystal. Glyphs can also be taken out and returned to the inventory.
