Three Wheeled Buggies

Whether you're seeking a buggy to run around in or a nifty stroller to tackle neighbourhood walks, three wheeled buggies provide great mobility. Their compact design makes them easy to maneuver even in tight spots.

For an easy ride, opt for a pram that has air-filled tyres. Also, look for models with a 360deg front swivel wheel. They are, however, susceptible to punctures. Be prepared with a repair set.

Frame made of sturdy material

New data show that three-wheeled buggies that were the symbol of the noughties that had more money than common sense, are in a steep decline. Four-wheelers have replaced them, which are more versatile and easy to drive while still looking stylish.

The larger the wheels are the better your buggy can deal with bumpy and uneven pavements. With larger wheels front and back makes it much easier to manoeuvre and more stable when walking downhill or on difficult terrain.

MFM reviewer Kath tested this buggy with the newborn baby and a lightweight 3 wheel buggy-year-old child and found it extremely robust. It was able to handle cobbles, grass, and rough pavements, aswell as dirt tracks and kerbs. Kath said that "it is sturdy to push and is very stable when going over difficult terrain. Its tyres (which are inflatable, so require periodic pumping) have suspension built-in that was very comfortable for my kids.

Another thing to consider is the size of the seat and shape. You'll want it to be big enough for your child's comfort. You will also want it to be able to recline to allow them to lie flat. Some three-wheel buggies offer a full lie-flat option while others only allow for the parent to be facing one.

The Roma Atlas is a great option for off-road or muddy walks. The buggy can be used as a one-person unit from the beginning and can be modified to accommodate two children as your family expands. It is suitable for babies and toddlers until age 4 and comes with a bumper bar, raincover, an improved 5-point harness and large padded seat unit. The storage options are great too, with a decent-sized basket, zip pockets inside the hood and a handy pouch on the rear of the seat unit.

Larger wheels

Larger wheels will give your buggy more stability when driving over rough terrain. This is especially beneficial for buggies designed for off-road use. Additionally, they allow you to maneuver the pushchair in tight spaces. A lot of three-wheeled buggies come with swivel front wheels to assist you in maneuvering around tight corners, while others are designed for running and come with fixed front wheels that lock to increase the speed and stability with which they can be driven. This is also helpful in the event that you hit a tree root or stray road, as the front wheel will rise up to keep you from hitting it.

A majority of 3 wheeled pushchairs wheel pushchairs come with air-filled tyres, which means they are able to handle many different terrains and are more flexible than four wheelers. They are also lighter. They are also more susceptible to punctures, so you'll require an repair kit and spare inner tubes on hand.

Some of our favourite 3-wheelers include the Mountain Buggy Core and Venicci Carbo Lux. Both of these buggies come with larger wheels that, according to MFM reviewer Kath, "perform really well on grass, gravel tracks and market town cobbles" and are able to effortlessly go up and down kerbs. They also have a suspension that, according to Kath "smooths out bumps with great efficiency".

Buggies with bigger wheels can be quite wide, and may struggle to fit into tight spaces. This is problematic if you intend to use it for jogging, or need to fit through doorways that are narrow while traveling. Fortunately, the majority of models come with small folding options that allow you to take off the front wheels to make compact storage.

Easy to manoeuvre

A three-wheeler can be more comfortable to drive with a child. The way they are built means that the front wheels rotate at a whim and are incredibly easy to manoeuvre and are ideal for difficult terrain like cobbles, parks, bumpy pavements and dirt tracks.

MFM reviewer Kath tried out a three-wheeler with her infant and toddler and wrote: "The Terrain was a delight to maneuver on the terrain and the swivel front wheel being especially helpful. I was also impressed by how well it dealt with bumps, particularly when using the hand-operated brake. It was very stable for descending or on uneven terrain."

The only drawback to this great maneuverability is that the 3 wheel buggy's larger wheels sometimes mean it has to struggle in tight spaces - something to keep in mind especially if you live in a city area. If this is the case then a four-wheeled buggy might be the better choice for you.

MFM reviewer Kath said it was ideal on cobbles and grass. It's also a great option for running thanks to its air-filled tyres and locking swivel wheels.

Kath who was our MFM reviewer, also adored the roominess of the buggy. There's an easily accessible, large basket that is surprising spacious for a vehicle that's this big. Additionally, there's a handy pouch on the back seat unit, and 2 smaller mesh pockets beneath the hood, where you can keep your phone and keys.
