Item upgrades are a way to boost the stats of an item. Based on the type of upgrade it could increase an item's Mark Level or Rarity, as well as boost other stats.

The item level can be seen by pressing the ALT key on a PC or using the left stick (L3) on XB1 and PS4. This will show the full item description, including its ilvl. You can also locate it by hovering over an item and typing in /itemlevel chat.

There are various theories about how the item level calculation is carried out. Item Luck

Item Failure

Item upgrades are costly and not every upgrade will be successful. Cash shop items can be used to boost the success rate of an upgrade, or to protect players from losing their items if it is not successful.

The success rate of an upgrade is displayed in the Honing UI. The percentage is the probability of successfully upgrading an item. This can be increased with Additional Materials or Special materials. There are limitations to how much success rates can be increased, and the overall chance of an upgrade failing can't exceed 100%.

The success of an item upgrades is also influenced by the Luck of that item. All items have an average success rate of 25% and each item with Luck increases the chance of success by an additional five percent.

The item upgrade overlays are displayed above items in the inventory. This could obscure enchantment effects and other effects. If you wish to disable the upgrade overlays, the config option decoration.renderUpgradeOverlays can be set to False in the Item Upgrader CORE client config.
