Path of Exile Item Upgrades

Upgrades to items are a frequent and important way to improve the performance of numerous items in Path of Exile. They can provide extra damage, AD or even affixes.

Rare-grade equipment can be superior to the more modernized Common or Magic equipment due to their high demands.

Armor

Armor upgrades can be applied to both armor and weapon items. They improve the effectiveness of the item they are connected to. Upgrades to armor can be found in the world of the game and can be purchased from Blacksmiths at bonfires. They can also be salvaged using an expert or higher salvage kits to salvage upgrade components from other items.

The amount of damage an armored item or weapon is able to absorb is dependent on the level of its upgrades. The damage absorption of a piece armor will increase when it's upgraded to the maximum upgrade level. However, it's important keep in mind that this will raise its weight, requiring it to be heavier than before.

There are many different kinds of armor upgrades available in the game. Each one has a distinct effect. Some upgrades give armor an additional number of health points, while others make it lighter and more powerful. The name of the armor upgrade will indicate the kind of upgrade that an item will be given, as illustrated below.

Certain upgrades require magic or a hybrid technology and magic, which is identified by the "Magic" and "Hybrids" entries in the table below. Additionally, some upgrades require a fee to use, which are shown by an "Charges" entry in the table below. The charges for these upgrades change daily or never expire, dependent on the upgrade.

The cheapest method to upgrade armor is to use Iron Ore, which can be gathered by exploring the environment and looting chests of minor loot. Titanium is more expensive, however, it is available at the smelters in Orgrimmar and Stormwind City. Certain upgrades, like the Reforge and the Hot Potato Books, can only be applied to high level armor pieces. These upgrades can give a significant improvements in stats and are worth the cost.

A piece of armor upgraded to max upgrade level will greatly increase its defense values but the wearer must be aware that increasing its weight will dramatically reduce its agility and speed. Therefore, it is not recommended to upgrade armor pieces that are higher than +9 because the increase in defense is generally not worth the extra weight and power cost of the improvements required.

Weapons

Weapon upgrades allow players to enhance certain aspects of their weapon. For instance an upgrade can increase the damage dealt by a shotgun's shells or the accuracy of a rifle that snipes. Certain firearms also have upgrades that improve their innate characteristics. Frictionless materials (improves stability, reduces the risk of the risk of overheating) and Kinetic coils (increases the projectile's speed for greater damage) are two examples.

The majority of upgrades for weapons require the use of a whetblade, or one of the three Power Dices and a different amount of Minerals and Erons. These can be gained by completing Side Quests or killing a certain amount of monsters and bosses.

To upgrade an equipment set, weapon piece, or Whetblade, you must visit the NPC [Armor] Boboko located in Central Flarine, and pay her an upgrade fee of a certain amount of bars. The more bars needed to complete an upgrade items, the more expensive the upgrade. The cost of the upgrades will be less if you have more than one of the upgrade materials.

In Chapter 2: Season 5, the ways to upgrade your equipment and weapon sets was a bit different. Prior to Chapter 2 Season 5, you could upgrade your weapon or equipment by paying a certain amount of Bars. You could do this until the weapon or equipment reached its maximum upgrade level and at that point, the upgrades would reset.

It's still possible, but it depends heavily on RNG. You're better off buying gear that has low levels of upgrade, but high base scores and stat distributions. These items will have a greater chance of granting you the highest tier benefits and blessings.

To increase their level faster, many players prioritise upgrading their weapons. Players should also upgrade the weapons that their teammates use to boost their strength. Shepard for instance should upgrade his M92F to unlock the Beretta M93R. This will make the weapon more effective when used in conjunction with biotic specialists like Grunt and Tali.

Jewels

Jewels can be used to boost the effectiveness of a skill or provide additional effects in weapons and armor. They can be created using the process of jewelry crafting, where you combine a gem and a number of specific chemicals at a table. The higher the quality of the gemstone, the better the secondary effect. These reagents are obtained in the world through Treasure Goblins, World Bosses and occasionally by salvaging Legendary equipment. You can also buy them from The Jeweler in exchange for Scattered Prisms and gold.

The quality of a diamond can be improved upon by the Jeweler in stages that range from Crude to Royal. The boosts to stats will differ according to the tier that the jewel is in when it's inserted into jewelry, weapons, or gear.

All tiers of jewels can be crafted at the Jeweler and Jeweler's Workshop, with the exception of the rare and legendary jewels that require you to be at a high enough level to qualify for the privilege of having them. Unlike other upgrade components, jewels are able to be swapped with another identical jewel without damaging the original one. However it is only possible to replace the jewels in an Item Upgrader mod of equipment once.

It is normal to use more jewelry for aesthetic reasons. Jewels also enhance performance and make a surface harder than steel so that repeated friction caused by pivots does not damage them.

In addition to the above-mentioned upgrades, the player can also acquire glyphs for their weapons and shields from a Glyphmaster. They offer a small benefit and can be swapped freely however they aren't guaranteed to drop as loot. Glyphs are upgradeable, like jewelry, at the Jeweler for gold, and also scattered Crystal. Glyphs are also removed and returned to the inventory. Other upgrade components, such as traits and aegis are not swappable, and can only be retrieved using an Upgrade Extractor, or by salvaging them using Black Lion Salvage Kit or an Ascended Salvage Tool.

Trinkets

Trinkets are pieces of equipment that offer many small, but beneficial benefits to your hero. They can be obtained in the beginning areas as loot or personal story rewards from vendors, or by performing road interactions. They can also be made by jewelers, and then found or purchased on the Trading Post.

The first trinkets that a player is able to unlock is the cloak. It grants an unimportant but beneficial boost in speed of movement and the ability to escape. Then, they can purchase amulets, rings and necklaces in the same manner to the way a player obtains weapons and armor. Each piece of equipment has one upgrade slot that accepts either a universal or jewel upgrade. Universal upgrades offer smaller bonuses and can be put into any kind of equipment while jewelry cannot be replaced or upgraded, and only works with specific types of trinkets.

These trinkets also grant additional bonuses and abilities that are active when the hero is not in combat. This allows the hero to become more efficient even when not in combat. It also helps compensate for the absence of excellent slots in the team or talent tree which are usually filled by the hero's best stats.

As a general rule, trinket upgrades should prioritize BiS (Best in Slot) items that you aren't likely to replace in the near future. Next, any items with desirable statistics that aren't as significant as the iLevel of the item upgrade that is to be upgraded. This is especially true if an item has multiple stats you'd like to upgrade, since it's generally more beneficial to upgrade one crucial stat than two subpar ones.

Jungle players usually upgrade item their yellow trinkets to a red one prior to the beginning of the game. Mid and top players however, will choose a green or a pink ward, depending on the game's matchup. These choices will have a major impact on the hero's ability to control his map.

Apart from the items listed above, players can also find other items in the form of trophies and awards. They can be earned by completing certain milestones within the story, like finishing a chapter's main quest or destroying a boss. You can check them out by clicking on the achievement in the reward section of the hero's menu.
