Evolution Korea

The democratic system in South Korea is vulnerable to populist impulses. It's still better than was expected.

The country is in search of a new development paradigm. A Confucian culture that stresses respect for ancestors as well as gendered family relations continues influence society. There are signs of a secularist cultural trend forming.

Origins

In the early days, the ancestors to modern Koreans were capable of survival through hunting and gathering wild foods. Then around 10,000 years ago, they began to grow crops such as millet and beans. They also raised livestock and made furs. These people formed tribal states one after the other in Manchuria and on the Korean peninsula. They also developed an industry for metalworking, which produced bronze tools and later iron ones. As Korea enters the post-crisis period the development paradigm of the country is in flux. Those who are horrified by the cost of the old system support a comprehensive program of liberalization of labor, capital and markets for products. On the other hand, champions of the old system are seeking to keep it in place by leveraging nationalist sentiments and exaggerating fears about job losses.

Academic and policy analysts remain sharply divided on the extent to the extent that these two trends are driving Koreas development towards an economic model that is radically different from the one of governance. This article examines the five phases of Korea's evolution in terms of its political development that include democratically illiberal democracies (1945-60) democratic autoritarianism (1961-72) authoritarian exceptionalism (1972-1877), democratic paternalism (2001-2002) and participatory democracy (2002). Creationism in Korea

In South Korea, 26 percent of the population is Christian. Creationists have made progress in promoting their beliefs to this segment. A 2009 survey showed that nearly a third of respondents didn't believe in evolution. Of those who voted, 41% stated there was not enough scientific evidence to support the theory 39% of respondents claimed that it did not align with their religious beliefs. 17% said they did not comprehend it. This level of doubt is similar to that of the United States, where a similar number of people do not accept that humans evolved from less advanced forms of life.

In the past, the anti-evolution campaign in Korea was focused on the education of students and bringing Christ to them. An increase in the interest in creation science occurred in the year 1980, when there was a four-day seminar held during the World Evangelization Crusade in Seoul which featured Drs. Henry Morris and Duane Gish of ICR as the featured speakers. The event was attended by a large number of pastors, professors, church leaders and scientists.

In the late nineteenth century and the early 20th century, Korea began to adopt a more Westernized style of life. Later Baekje was peacefully integrated into Goryeo as an alternative state. Wang Geon also introduced fundamental reforms and strengthened the centralized ruling system. This marked the conclusion of the Three Kingdoms period. The Korean peninsula was then ruled by the Goryeo Dynasty. In the Three Kingdoms Period, Goguryeo Baekje Silla slowly grew into powerful states on the peninsula as well as in Manchuria.
