Upgrades increase the value of certain numeric statistics on armor, weapons and rings. They also boost extra bonuses, such as PvE damage and crit chance.

For example an item with the upgrade template ending in % will take on 3% attack damage every time it is upgraded (relative to its previous value).

Item upgrading costs crests and the item upgrade's current level. The cost increases with the item's level.

Components

Upgrade components are items that can be inserted into armor, weapons and trinkets to give an additional stat boost or impact while they're being used. They can be obtained through crafting, purchasing from vendors or trading with other players or looting. Some upgrades have special cosmetic effects.

Upgrade components can be inserted into equipment with a slot for them. The item must have been at a minimum upgraded to blue level for a component to be inserted. Upgrade components, unlike other mods, can only be applied once. They are not able to be replaced or applied several times. Infusions and enrichments are a specific type of upgrade component that is used to upgrade non-amulet ascended or legendary equipment, as well as some of the non-ascended back items. Enrichments and Infusions can be obtained by salvaging ascended equipment or completing a quest in the Prophecies, Factions, and Nightfall campaigns.

A prefix or suffix may be added to an upgrade, which alters the name of the item it's used on (for example 'Canthan Armor Insignia,' is changed to Canthan Armor Minor Vigor). Certain upgrades boost the Mark Level or Rarity, which allows players to create stronger versions of the equipment that require less Upgrade Crystals than is required to reach the same level of upgrade using normal methods.

A boost upgrade can alter the attack or defense attributes of a weapon, or armor. These upgrades are available to be crafted from the Portative Forging Station once the player has completed the cutscene and defeats the Crazed mechanic. They can be dropped by enemies while upgrading other gear, or by buying them from the cash shop for 500 upgrade crystals per.

Each upgrade increases the probability that a better-quality version of an item will be revealed in the next reset. This gives the player some incentive to keep upgrading their gear even if they're not sure of how much they'll improve after a future reset.

Whether a boost upgrade is successful or not, the process may be costly and there is a significant chance that the Best item upgrade could be obsolete or even break when it fails. A failure to upgrade can ruin the Upgrade Crystals and Assist Powder as well as the upgraded item. Cash shop items can be used to minimize or eliminate the possibility of failure. Certain upgrades also provide a bonus if reinserted.

Glyphs

Glyphs are upgrade elements that can be inserted into special sockets on the Paragon Board. Glyphs boost the power of all nodes in a radius around them and include pre-existing affixes to equipment. The use of the Glyph will boost all nodes that are connected to it, so you should aim to place your Glyphs near the most important nodes of the Graph to maximize the impact. For example an Druid should aim to place their Glyphs near their primary damage points, but you should also consider placing them near critical damage nodes as well.

Leveling

The item upgrading system allows players to increase the performance of certain items by placing upgraded components inside them. This is often referred to as "upping". Each upgradeable item comes with a level that determines its upgraded stats. Upgraded items can be leveled to a maximum of ilvl 385. Each level of an item requires a different amount of components to be reached and the cost of upgrading increase as the item is leveled up.

Certain upgrades require a certain ingredient to activate. This ingredient is obtained by completing Upgrade Recipes. These recipes can be found in the upgrade tab of a crafting table or obtained from NPCs. Each Upgrade Recipe that is completed results in a certain amount of Technology points. These points can be used to level the item. Once enough points are earned, the upgrade will be claimed and the additional bonuses will be added to the item.

When a player improves the equipment they have, the base item will be replaced with the new item. The same armor will be upgraded to an weapon or shield when upgraded. The new item will have its own set bonus. This could be a problem because it can make the item more expensive, even if you don't require it.

If the player has enough tokens, they can reroll item upgrades. This causes the item to be exchanged for a new one, which will have an initial level and a different set of bonus bonuses. This is a good option for some items, but it shouldn't be repeated often, as it can use up lots of resources.

Some upgrades can increase their value and allow players to modify their equipment. Failures will result in the item returning to its original state, which requires the player to spend additional materials than if they had stopped upgrading after the maximum amount.

If an item fails to upgrade the amount of experience in its growth bar is reset to zero. The item will also lose any bonuses it earned like the chance to crit, attack damage, or additional effects (such as increased heal over time, or reloading speed). However, the user can still continue to use the weapon or armor following the failure.

If an item is upgraded the upgrades are applied from lowest to highest. This means that the weapon that is upgraded receives a crit chance boost, the increase will be applied before any damage to attack increases. Slots is a new attribute that has been added to item definitions. The value is recalculated each time an upgrade occurs.

The amount of resources required to upgrade an item is based on its rarity rating and the number of upgrade slots. The cost of upgrading non-premium equipment is equal to the value of the base item.
