Costs
Upgrades are accompanied by a few associated costs. The first is the cost of performing the upgrade. This price is contingent on the new ilvl of the item and the amount of perks it gains, and can be expensive. It can also be costly to upgrade an item to a better tier (such as Explorer > Champion or Veteran > Heroic).
The second is the cost of the items needed to upgrade. The items used are usually either Power Dices (dropped by monsters 21and up) or Minerals and Erons (obtainable by completing certain Mists of Pandaria or Warlords of Draenor quests). Upgrades to an item are an intricate process that requires time. It can take 8 hours depending on the size of the upgrade. The upgraded item's base stats are calculated based on the new ilvl of the item bonuses, perks, and other properties. This calculation determines the new Armor Class bonuses, damage dice, and other important stats. In some cases, an upgrade can grant additional benefits. These perks are listed on a list.
In rare cases, the upgrade will replace only the highest-costing bonuses. The upgrader can also make other modifications to the item, for example, changing the type of damage it deals to its weapon or removing an operative or unwieldy option. The cost for these modifications is determined by the new ilvl of the item, and it could require a special substance like the adamantine alloy.
Success Rate
The upgrading of an item is based on chance. Like any random system there is a chance that it won't succeed. However there are a few things which can improve the chance of success. This includes using an Upgrade Pity or the addition extra materials to your upgrade.
The Upgrade Pity can be bought through the NPC for crafting in Lost Ark. It increases the odds of the upgrade being successful by an amount. It's similar to the "luck bonus" that certain items provide, but it is more reliable. This can be added to any weapon or armor, and is used three times.
You can also add additional materials to the upgrade to increase its chances of success. These are shown in a window above the + button. There are however limitations to this, and the maximum amount of material that can be added is shown right above the + button in the UI.
Another method to increase the odds of an upgrade succeeding is to use the Best item Upgrade known as the Blacksmith Blessing or an upgraded version of it. This item can be helpful when your piece of equipment or weapon is close to or has reached the maximum level of its tier.
