Item upgrading allows players to improve their weapons and equipment with new affixes that boost its stats base or giving additional benefits. To upgrade an item, the player needs to have it in their inventory, as well as access to the kiln.

Items that have weak bases, like rings, can be upgraded into stronger bases. Items with strong bases, such as Titans from eth, have no changes in their stats.

Upgrade components

If the player upgrades their gathering tool, and replaces the glyphs with a different one, the old one will be returned to their inventory. If you replace any other upgrade component, it will be destroyed, except for the inscriptions that can be freely swapped.

Leveling

Path of Exile's upgrade process differs from previous versions in some fundamental ways. Gear is now divided into tracks and items can only be upgraded a specific number of times before they're "leveled out." The cost for upgrades increases with each level, but the required materials do not increase as much. This allows players to concentrate their efforts on a few important items to maximize their impact instead of spreading the cost of upgrades across several items.
