Evolution Korea

The democratic system in South Korea is prone to populist tendencies. However, it is more stable than one would expect.

Origins

As Korea is entering the post-crisis phase, its development paradigm appears to be in flux. The people who are awed by the huge cost of the old system are in favor of a comprehensive plan for liberalization of labor, capital and product markets. On the other hand those who support the old system want to protect it by using nationalist sentiments and generating fear about job losses.

Policy and academic analysts are in a tense debate about the extent to which these two developments are driving Koreas shift towards an economic model that is radically different from the one of governance. This article assesses the latest developments by analyzing five phases of Korea's political development that include the illiberal democratic period (1945-60) democratic authoritarianism (1961-72) and authoritarian exceptionalism (1972-87), democratic paternalism (1987-2001), and participatory democracy (2002 to the present). This article also highlights the most important factors that are driving these developments.

Creationism in Korea

In South Korea, 26% of the population is Christian. Creationists have had success in promoting their beliefs to this group. A survey from 2009 showed that nearly one-third of respondents didn't believe in evolution. Of the respondents, 41% stated that there wasn't enough scientific evidence to support evolution 39% claimed that the theory did not align with their beliefs; and 17% said it was difficult to understand. This level of disbelief approaches that in the United States, where a similar percentage of people do not believe that humans evolved from earlier species of life.
