WoW Upgrades - The Item Upgrader

Upgrades give a guaranteed boost to specific stats. Each upgrade increases the level of the item by +3. A random additional substat is also increased with each upgrade.

The upgraded gear is usually more valuable, unless the item is not required by nature (like FB sorc shields) or has a large variance in stats (like eth Titan weapons). Upgrades aren't as important for those with higher variance due to the requirement to roll a perfect version.

Recycle Points

The item upgrader allows players to upgrade their gear to a higher item upgrader kit level by supplying the appropriate currency to the NPC. Upgrades can be applied to any kind of weapon or armor. However, the item used to upgrade will be consumed for the duration of time and will not be able to be used again. Upgrades can also be used to create enhancements.

The upgrader is located in all major cities, and can be accessed anytime to upgrade your equipment. It is recommended that you visit the upgrader at least once every few weeks to ensure that your equipment is up-to-date.

Upgrades can cost more based on the level of the item however, they are always cheaper than buying new equipment. Upgrades like upgrading a Benthic chest to ilvl385 will cost you 20 recycle points. If you purchase a similar item, it will cost you 105.

Valorstones

Upgrades are functional items which can be used to level up weapons, tools, armor, and other accessories. They can be purchased by players from NPCs of item upgraders for various currencies. They can also find them in random treasure lists. Once purchased, an upgrade can be used on any weapon, tool or armor. The button will show the item's next upgrade level when there are enough materials.

Upgrade costs differ based on the slot of the item level upgrade and the current level of the item. For example weapons cost more than gloves, bracers, or bracers. Each upgrade cost 15 Flightstones plus a certain number of crests. Certain upgrades provide a discount on the Flightstones. After an item has been upgraded to a certain degree, it can be degraded and returned to the upgrader for a lower amount of the two currency types.

Upgraders for items can be found at many locations on the main island and some outposts. The NPCs provide both an upgrade discount and a chance to get a brand new upgrade recipe. The discount for upgrading increases when more items are upgraded. It can be increased if players complete certain achievements or quests.

Icewind Dale does not have an item upgrader at start unlike Cromwell from Baldur's gate II. Instead, the NPCs that can be used to upgrade require several methods, which is both an improvement as well as a disadvantage.

In Season 3, several new features have been added to the upgrade system. After an upgrade has been completed to a certain item level for an armor slot, upgrading other items to the same level, will cost less. This is true even if those items are from another set of gear.

The amount of Valorstones needed for upgrades is reduced, and the discount is available across all accounts. In the same way, the amount of Harbinger Crests required to upgrade is also reduced and is not available until players achieve certain achievement milestones.

Crests

When it comes to upgrading equipment in WoW, players have a variety of choices. Flightstones are a currency that is available to everyone for upgrading. Crests are more specific, and are used during specific item level upgrade level upgrades. Crests are an integral element of the Dragonflight Gear Progression System, which was introduced in version 10.1. They are available in four ranks.

The first thing to note is that crests can only be used to purchase equipment of a particular rank, and that each rank has different requirements for upgrading. The simplest and most straightforward upgrade path costs 15 crests, while the more complex one requires as many as 20 crests, based on the kind of gear that is being upgraded.

Players can earn crests through working through content that is of the appropriate level, whether that means walking around and doing outdoor activities for gear of lower tiers, raids or dungeons of all difficulties for higher-tier items or Mythic+ dungeons or heroic raid bosses for endgame gear. These crests can be exchanged with an upgrader for the item like Cuzolth or Vaskarn in Valdrakken to upgrade the item in the proper steps and routes.

The new currency system isn't too difficult to use, but it brings some changes to the process of upgrading. When a piece attains the highest level of upgrade for any rank (Explorer or Adventurer) it will no longer require Flightstones. This is to allow players to upgrade their equipment up to the highest possible ilvl for all their characters instead of relying only on seasonal loot.

Another significant change is that crests have one purpose and it's crucial to use them properly. For instance it's a good idea to use all of your Whelpling-rank crests with the Best item upgrader equipment you have, and then save Drake and Wyrm crests for the next batch of upgrades you plan to make. This is particularly relevant for rings and trinkets that fill multiple slots on the character, that will be able to take advantage of the account-wide discount if all of the slots are full of high-quality gear.
