They are purchased by players through item level Upgrade upgrader NPCs in exchange for a variety of currencies, and can be found in random treasure lists. Once purchased, an upgrade can be used on any weapon, tool or armor. The button will display a preview of an item's next upgrade level, in the event that there are enough materials.

The cost of upgrading is based on the item slot and the current item level and the weapon's price is higher than bracers or gloves, for instance. Each upgrade cost 15 Flightstones plus a set number of crests. Some upgrades give a discount on the Flightstones. This change lets players upgrade their gear to the highest possible ilvl on all of their characters, instead of relying on seasonal loot.

It's also crucial to choose crests wisely, as they have only one purpose.
