Item upgrading allows players to improve their weapons and equipment with new affixes that boost its stats base or providing additional benefits. To upgrade items, the player must have the item in their inventory, and also access the kiln.

Items with weak bases, like rings, can be upgraded into stronger bases. Items with bases that are strong, such as the Titans of eth have little change in their stats.

Upgrade components

Upgrade components are items that can be incorporated into trinkets, armor, weapons and gathering tools, providing an attribute bonus or additional effect when the equipment is in use. They can be purchased from vendors, or found in loot from enemies, or obtained from chests or missions. Some upgrades can have additional cosmetic effects. Most upgrades require that the equipment be at a specific level to upgrade.

To upgrade an armor, weapon or other item in the game, players must select it and click the Upgrade button on the toolbar. This will display on the right-hand side of the screen a preview showing the expected upgrade stats as well as the required component or materials.

There are three types of upgrade components that are universal upgrades, prefix upgrades and suffix upgrades. Universal upgrades, like gems, are able to be placed on any type of equipment. They offer a lesser bonus than upgrade components that have a specific type limitation. If a player upgrades a gathering tool, and then replaces the glyphs with a different one, the old one will be returned to their inventory. However, replacing any other upgrade component will damage it, excluding the inscriptions that can be swapped.

Leveling

Path of Exile's upgrade process is different from the previous versions in a few key ways. Gear is now divided into tracks and items can only be upgraded a set number of times before they're "leveled out." The upgrade costs increase with each level, however the materials required do not. This allows players to focus their efforts on a handful of key items and maximize their impact, rather than spreading out the upgrade costs across several items.
