Item upgrading allows players to improve their weapons and gear by adding new affixes that boost its stats base or adding additional perks. To upgrade items, players must have the item in their inventory and access the kiln.

Typically, items with weak bases (like rings) can be upgraded to a stronger base while items with strong bases like eth titans do not vary much in their stats after being upgraded.

Upgrade components

Upgrade components can be added to armors, weapons, trinkets, and gathering tools. They provide an attribute benefit, or an additional benefit, while the equipment is in use. They can be bought from vendors, retrieved as loot by enemies, or received from chests and missions. Some upgrades can have additional cosmetic effects. Most upgrades require that the equipment be at a certain level before you can upgrade.

To upgrade an item of armor, the player has to select it, and then click on the Upgrade button in the toolbar. This will display on the right-hand side of the screen a preview showing the expected upgrade statistics and the required component or materials.

There are three kinds of upgrade components including universal upgrades, prefix upgrades and suffix upgrades. Universal upgrades, which are made up of gems, can be placed in any type of equipment and provide smaller bonuses than upgrade components that are restricted to a specific type. Infusions are only placed in ascended gear or legendary equipment, are the same as jewels but provide larger bonuses and cannot be used in any other type of equipment. In the case of upgrades for gathering tools If a player replaces one glyph with a different one, the old glyph will be returned to the inventory. However, replacing any other upgrade component can destroy it, with the exception of inscriptions which can be freely swapped.

Leveling

Path of Exile's upgrade system differs from the previous versions in a few fundamental ways. Gear is now classified into tracks and each item can be upgraded as many times before it's "leveled out." The upgrade cost increases with each level up however, the materials needed do not increase as much. This allows players to concentrate their efforts on a few important items to maximize their impact instead of spreading the cost of upgrades across several pieces.
