Upgrades increase the value of certain numeric stats on weapons, armor and rings. They also increase bonuses like PvE damage and crit chance.

For instance an item with the upgrade template that is ending in % will gain 3damage to attack each time it is upgraded (relative to its previous value).

Components

Upgrade components can be incorporated into weapons, armor and trinkets in order to give them a boost in stats or to add an additional effect. They can be obtained through making crafts, buying from vendors, trading with other players or looting. Certain upgrades also come with special cosmetic effects.

Upgrade components can be inserted into equipment that has a slot for them; the item must be at a minimum upgraded to blue level in order for the component to be inserted. In contrast to other mods components can only be used one time; they can't be used multiple times or replaced with upgrades. Infusions and enrichments are a specific kind of upgrade component that is designed for non-amulet ascended and legendary equipment and some of the back items that are not ascending. Infusions and enrichments can be obtained by salvaging equipment that is ascended or by completing a mission within the Prophecies, Factions, and Nightfall campaigns.

An upgrade may include a suffix or prefix that alters the name of the equipment with which it is used (for instance "Canthan Armor Insignia' becomes Canthan Armor of Minor Vigor). Some upgrades increase the Mark Level or Rarity, allowing players to create stronger versions of the equipment that require less Upgrade Crystals than are required to reach the same level of upgrade through normal methods.

A boost upgrade can change the attack or defence characteristics of a weapon, or armor. After the player has completed the cutscene and defeated the Crazed Mechanist, these upgrades can be made at the Portative Forging Station. These upgrades can be obtained by purchasing them in the cash shop or by collecting them from enemies when upgrading other gear.

The player can get a maximum of five boost upgrades at a time. Each upgrade increases the chance that a higher-level version of the item upgrader mod will be available at the time of the next reset. This gives the player an incentive to continue upgrading their gear even if they're not sure of the extent to which it will increase after a future reset.

Whether a boost upgrade is successful or not, the process may be costly and there is a substantial chance that the item could become obsolete or even break when it fails; a failed upgrade will ruin the Upgrade Crystals and Assist Powder, as well as the upgraded item. Glyphs

You'll often see in the endgame that placing Glyphs is a great way to upgrade your equipment. They are the only upgrade component that can be upgraded directly to level 15 and provide significant boosts to your power and radius on the Paragon Board, enabling you to climb higher nodes more quickly.

The majority of upgrades in the game can be replaced however, Glyphs are only the one upgrade component that can be removed and put back in place without restrictions. The only exception is legendary equipment that requires the use of a Black Lion Salvage Kit to salvage and re-place.

Each Glyph has a specific range of values that it can improve a stat by. The value is shown when you choose the Glyph in your inventory. You can decide to replace it with a Glyph of the same rank or a higher rank, which will boost the overall value of the Glyph.

There are Glyphs in the Black Lion Trading Post, as part of an Gem Store purchase or bundle with certain unlimited-use gathering tools and also through Faction Crypt raids. Every Faction Crypt will drop one of these Glyphs. There are some rare glyphs you can find in any of the Faction Crypts.

When a player upgrades a piece of equipment the original item will be replaced by an item that is new. This means that the same armor piece will get a weapon or shield when upgraded. The new item will also come with a bonus of its own. This can be a disadvantage in that it could cause the item to become more expensive if you do not require it.

If the player has enough tokens they can roll item upgrades. The item will be replaced by a brand new one that has a level 1 basis and totally different bonuses. This is a good idea, but should not be repeated often since it can waste resources.

Certain upgrades can boost their value and allow players to modify their gear. One example is Dolphin's Gift, which gives an advantage when a player repeatedly enters and leaves the water (or does not swim as a dolphin). Requirements

The failure rate increases as you move beyond the maximum number. Failures will cause the item to go back to its original state, requiring the player to spend more money on materials than they would had they stopped upgrading at the maximum amount of upgrades.

If an item is not upgraded the experience bar on the bar for growth will be reset to zero. Additionally the item will be deducted any bonuses it gained such as crit chance and attack damage, as well as all additional effects associated with that effect (for instance, a higher healing over time or reload speed). The player is able to use their weapon or armor even after the failure.

If an item is upgraded, the upgrades are applied from the lowest to the highest.
