Both the Q5 and Q7 Max Series get very excellent scores in our bare floor tests, and they're particularly adept at cleaning pet hair. They do have some flaws however, which hinder them from being our first option. One of them is that the Q5's navigation system does not include AI-powered obstacle avoidance and is therefore prone to get caught up in socks and shoes and couldn't navigate tight spaces very efficiently in our tests. It doesn't also come with a camera to look around corners.

It's still a good deal, especially if your office or home has a lot of bare floors and you want to save some money. Plus, it's very quiet and can be used while you're at work or school. It lacks the edge-to-edge bare floor vacuuming that is offered in the more expensive iRobot Roomba X30. And it's less effective at mopping, as it relies on disposable wet wipes that don't hold on well and aren't able to deal with dried-on debris. The Q5 comes with a self-emptying cradle however. And, if you have to, you can switch the mopping pad for a dry one in minutes.

2. iRobot Roomba

The iRobot Roomba X30 packs impressive mopping and vacuuming into a compact, sleek package. Its smart cleaning maps and fluid navigation make it simple to clean and effective in tackling larger particles such as pet hair. It also comes with self-emptying dustbins as well as powerful suction, and support for virtual boundaries. It's the best robot cleaner robotic hoover for carpets but it isn't as effective as some of its competitors in terms of deep cleaning.

It's a bit more expensive than iRobot Combo v9+ or iRobot Roomba j9+ but it has superior suction and an onboard bin that is automatically empty into the base. It also supports voice commands via Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant. It even cleans the floor after it vacuums it, something we haven't seen in other robot vacuum/mop combinations.

3. iRobot Roomba X40

This mop and vacuum combination is sleek and has a circular design that appears more like the regular Roomba model than the boxy models of the rivals. It is one of our most attractive looking robot vacuums. iRobot’s latest flagship model is also the most intelligent. It comes with advanced features like Enhanced Dirt Detection and future compatibility (another company’s robot that can wash mop pads autonomously).

It's also the only robot vacuum/mop that scored the perfect 10/10 out of 10 in our evaluations. This is thanks to a combination modern sensors, including a restructured lighting system, a camera, and a variety of lasers. The X40 Ultra is also the only robot in our tests that can completely autonomously refill and empty its base station and it boasts industry-leading 12,000Pa suction and self-cleaning mop pads.

The X40 as with other iRobot products, is simple to use. It has a simple mobile app interface that integrates with Amazon Alexa and Apple HomeKit. The only downside is that the X40 still a loud unit. This could be a problem in mornings before work, or in the evening when you're trying to sleep.

It's also somewhat expensive, though it's not as expensive as the Ecovacs X2 Omni or Roborock's S8 MaxV Ultra both of which are equally capable and look better. If you're willing to live with a bit more noise and a little more cost this is a efficient two-in-one device that should please almost everyone.

4. iRobot Roomba L20 Ultra

The L20 Ultra is a top-of-the-range robot vacuum and mop, with many advanced features to help you forget about your chores. Like Ecovacs' range-topping X2 Omni and Roborock's S8 Pro Ultra, the L20 is designed to be a hands-off cleaning machine that takes the care of mopping and vacuuming, with a multifunction dock that automatically empty the vacuum's dustbin, refills its water tank and cleans and dry its mop pads.

The smart robot uses LIDAR and structured lighting to draw out floor plans and detect obstacles. It navigates more intelligently than its top competitors. It also comes with a front-mounted camera to detect hazards in real-time, although this wasn't quite reliable in our tests and was often confused by power cords or other obstructions.

Its vacuum has a high maximum suction of 7,000 Pascals, which is more than enough to get the job done. It also comes with "Intelligent Dirt Detection", that regulates the amount of time the vacuum works and also alters the frequency of cleaning for different areas of your home depending on how dirty they are.

For larger houses it's worth looking for one with zone or spot cleaning modes that allow you to tell the robot to clean a specific area of your home by using the app or via voice commands. A stairway mode is useful if you own a number of furniture. Additionally the recharge and resume feature that lets your robot vacuum continue where it left off is ideal for busy families.

5. iRobot Roomba RX3

The RX3 is a smarter cleaner than you might expect from its price tag. It's a pro at vacuuming, picking up 55% of the debris we found in our tests (it was second only to the Roomba Q5 Pro). It also mopses using a single pad and a rotating motion which is cleaner than the majority mop cleaners for robots that we've examined. It's also self-sufficient, with a fully-featured app as well as a self-emptying, washable base.

The iRobot application is designed to help you navigate the mapping process which collects information about your floorplan as well as any "no go" areas that you've marked on the map.
