The process begins with a polymeric precursor that is the molecular foundation for carbon-rich fibers. Historically, this was either pitch or rayon. Today, the majority of carbon fibers are made of polyacrylonitrile (PAN), which is made from the chemical compounds ammonia and propylene.

Once carbon fiber is manufactured, it can be shaped and layered into composite materials to create a wide variety of products. The strength and stiffness of the material can be altered by altering the temperature at which it is processed. Carbon fibers are heated to increase their tensile strength and modulus of elastic. It can also be machined to create holes and voids which decrease its tensile strength but increases its modulus of elasticity.

Carbon fiber is naturally resistant to oxidation, which protects it from the ravages caused by corrosion. It has lower coefficient than metal and is therefore less likely to change shape when exposed to heat. Carbon fiber has better endurance properties than metal, meaning it will last longer.

Carbon fiber is used in the tailplanes and the fuselage of aircraft. The strength and lightweight of the material has allowed designers to create aircraft that are more secure and efficient than ever.
