Upgrades boost the value of certain numeric stats on weapons, armor and rings. Upgrades can also boost bonuses like Crit chance and damage from PvE.

If the template for upgrading a weapon is %, it will gain 3% of its previous damage each time it is upgraded.

Components

Upgrade components can be incorporated into weapons, armor and trinkets to give them a stat boost or add a bonus effect. They can be obtained through crafting, buying from vendors, trading with other players, or looting. Some upgrades have special cosmetic effects.

Upgrade components can be placed in equipment that has a slot to accommodate them. The item must have been at least upgraded to the blue level for a component to be inserted. Like other mods, upgrade components can only be used once; they cannot be applied multiple times or replaced by new upgrades. Infusions and Enrichments are type of upgrade component used to upgrade non-amulet legendary or ascending equipment, as in some items that aren't ascended. Infusions and enrichments can be recovered by salvaging gear from the ascended, or completing an elite task in the Prophecies, Factions and Nightfall campaigns.

A prefix or suffix may be added to an upgrade, thereby changing the name of the item it's applied to (for instance, 'Canthan Armor Insignia,' is changed to Canthan Armor Minor Vigor). Certain upgrades boost the Mark Level or Rarity of an item, which lets players to create stronger versions of the item using less upgrade crystals than they require to achieve the same level with normal methods.

A 'boost' upgrade can alter the attack or defence attributes of a weapon, or armor. After the player has completed the cutscene and defeated Crazed Mechanist, these upgrades can be created at the Portative Forging Station. Each Glyph has a certain range of values that it can improve a stat by. The value is displayed when you select the Glyph in your inventory. You can replace it with a Glyph that is of the same or higher rank to increase the value of the Glyph.

You can find Glyphs in the Black Lion Trading Post, as part of a Gem Store purchase or bundle with certain gathering tools that are unlimited-use as well as through Faction Crypt raids. Each Faction Crypt could drop one of these Glyphs. There are also some rare glyphs you can find in any of the Faction Crypts.

Once you have obtained the desired Glyphs then you need to place them on your gear. Leveling

The item upgrading system allows players to increase the effectiveness of specific items by putting upgraded components inside them. This is often referred to as "upping". Each upgradeable item has an amount, which determines its final upgraded stats. Upgraded items can be leveled up to a maximum level of 385. Each level requires a different number of components to be reached and the cost of upgrading increase as the Best item upgrade is leveled up.
